THE MASK

17 Feb 2012 -- Our Path through Life weaves through a maze of daily challenges, sorrows, disappointments, pain, suffering; and if fate allows, some LOVE and JOY and LAUGHTER.  The remainder of Life's Journey is a mystery – an adventure to unfold moment by moment – in a woven tapestry.

IS IT wise to let circumstance play its tune -- without spending energy to battle outcomes that may never eventuate (some call this the "Worry - Wart Syndrome")?

IS IT wise to waste your life changing or organizing events that cannot be altered from your efforts (some call this the "Serenity Prayer")?

IS IT wise to put on a 'brave face', a 'smiley face', a 'false face', a MASK – in order that one may be accepted by others?

So many questions – so many answers – so many perspectives!

WHAT MASK will I wear today?  To be accepted!  Loved!  Forgiven!  Penitent!  Remembered!  Cherished!  Employed!  Promoted!  Successful!  Saved!  Released!  Imprisoned!

WHO will see my MASK?
WHO will see that I'm even wearing a MASK?
WHO will see behind my MASK?
WHO will even be looking?

(God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.  ~ "Serenity Prayer", by Reinhold Niebuhr, American theologian and commentator, 1892-1971)

(JUST A NOTE — WHERE does ONE find the COURAGE to move on – beyond what can be seen?.  ~dht)

We CAN'T control the impressions others form about us, and THE EFFORT TO DO SO only debases our character.  [~Epictetus]

(JUST A NOTE—I do not think that this Greek slave Epictetus used these exact words!  DO YOU?  The words used in this phrase "CAN'T" and "THE EFFORT TO DO SO" seem too colloquial.  Nevertheless, the idea as recorded by Epictetus's pupil Arrian, may cause one to PAUSE and PONDER.  ~dht)

Epictetus (Greek: Ἐπίκτητος; AD 55 – AD 135) was a Greek sage and Stoic philosopher.  He was born a slave at Hierapolis, Phrygia (present day Pamukkale, Turkey), and lived in Rome until banishment when he went to Nicopolis in northwestern Greece where he lived the rest of his life.  His teachings were noted down and published by his pupil Arrian in his Discourses.  Philosophy, he taught, is a way of life and not just a theoretical discipline.  To Epictetus, all external events are determined by fate, and are thus beyond our control, but we can accept whatever happens calmly and dispassionately.  Individuals, however, are responsible for their own actions, which they can examine and control through rigorous self-discipline.  Suffering arises from trying to control what is uncontrollable, or from neglecting what is within our power.  As part of the universal city that is the universe, human beings have a duty to care for all fellow humans.  The person who followed these precepts would achieve happiness and peace of mind.

THE WHEEL OF LIFE -- of TIME

[Photo Source : Google online images]

(5 NOV 2011 --  I've been betrayed so many Times in my Life – now it seems the "norm" for any relationship I'm in.  So, I withdraw from any contact  --  to avoid any further suffering, falsehood, and betrayal. Even while the Wheels of Time turn, I exist in the shallows and shadows behind protective masks. Even the Mirror does NOT see the depth in me.    dht)

The Wheel of Life turns –
as I hover in the shadows –
ever wading through the shoals of Time.

Another turn of the Wheel –
an essence changed –
as Time and Age blends the patterns.

How shallow the sigh –
How deep the wounds –
How superficial the mind –
How deep the emotion.

The blush of the bloom – faded –
The vessel of the bouquet – weighted –
The trivial confounds the profound –
The thoughtful masks the perception.

Another Turn of the Wheel –
Another Step on the path –
Another Year on the rung –
Another Tear on the lash.

SEE WITH YOUR HEART

[Photo Source: Google online images – see photo for credit]

(28 OCT 2011 -- Whenever in doubt, I follow my Heart.  It knows the way that is true -- where my Eyes know only Blue.  JUST A FEW NOTES -- about how my Eyes have played me false, but my Heart has always been true!

What do you see with your EYES?   With your Heart?   Which do you follow -- today?  dht-2011)

My Eyes are the portals where Life's purview -- displays in wonder.
Where Eyes often guide one astray – the Heart will always lead you Home.
What disappoints the Eye – the Heart harkens with gladness.
When the Eye deceives – close your eyes and See with your Heart.
My Heart sees the beauty and Love within – while the Eyes see only the masks.

BITTERSWEET ABSENCE

Their absence in my Life is a Bittersweet ache still – that throbs in the back of my Heart, whenever I think of them which is often – but actually all the time!

After all, when I left in 1978 at age 32, they had been my Family – my Loves – for more than half my Life!  He was age 36 and our child age 14  - we were so young to be living in a Family without Love!

Now, at age 65, I still feel the pain of separation – the void where once Family existed and Never would be again in my Life!

However, there were no other options back then, and the pain of "Family" was killing my spirit and body with the sickness of neglect, betrayal, lies, and Lost Love!

The Loss – ever fresh – in my Heart and mind – has Never healed!

Some deep wounds Never do – such as in my case!

Sad and puzzling – really – for there was NO Loss for them – they went on with their Lives – without me – as if I NEVER was there at all, or ever had been!

No wonder then, why I was dying a slow death, day by day, when I resided under the same roof with Them!

The Pain was so BAD – I was seeing two doctors and taking medicine to dull the emotional pain and trauma!

They were killing me slowly!

Moreover, They still are – in their Bittersweet Absence from my Life!
